Taxidermy: 'Mouse in a Teacup'

Taxidermists have been practising their art since at least the 1600s, for many different purposes.  Learn a brief history of taxidermy and see items from our collections before using those specimens as a basis for creating your own!

On this full day experience you will learn how to create your own piece of taxidermy, taught by Beamish Engager Fiona Jennifer.

This experience is suitable for beginners and is a gentle introduction to taxidermy. You will even be able to take your own piece of taxidermy home with you.

Included in your Traditional Experience:

  • Expert tuition from our skilled museum Engager.
  • Your mouse specimen which you will be able to take home with you at the end of the day – please do not bring your own animal on the day as this will be provided.
  • A brief look into the history of taxidermy and a chance to see some of our taxidermy specimens in the museum’s collection, as well as an insightful look at the anatomy of a mouse as you work on your specimen.
  • All equipment needed and a protective apron and gloves for the duration of the experience.
  • Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Please note that our mice specimens are bred as reptile feed and are sourced legally in accordance with the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. None of our mice are killed for the purpose of taxidermy.

Please bear in mind that taxidermy is not for everyone
